The holidays are a special time when we get to spread cheer for all to hear. One way of doing that is to give thoughtful, meaningful gifts that are tailored to the recipients’ needs, such as sustainable gifts that will last.

In our 2019 holiday gift guide, we have curated some of our favorite products that are sustainably made, contribute positively to the environment, and are created by passionate people who want to help save the planet.

About the company: One of the first items that I chose for our new home was safe pans. After doing a good amount of research, I found that GreenPan was the best option. GC partners with a certified recycler in Taiwan, which used to be known as “Garbage Island”, repurposes the (treated) OEKO-certified safe dye water to make paving stones, and recycles trash found in the ocean such as fishing nets into their LITE leggings. The ECONYL® fiber they produce cut out the need for raw materials like crude oil, which are traditionally used in the production of nylon.

Their sewing facility has the SA8000 certification, which puts people before profits. It is managed by a woman named Hien who used to work at the United Nations Development Program. The factory workers are paid a living wage at 125 percent of the local minimum wage, receive health care, 6-month health check-ups and more.

About the company: Nothing New is going to great lengths to ensure they are “leaving the world better than they found it” through their sustainable production methods, using sewing methods that put the environment before profit, and creating high quality goods that will last.

Nothing New used post-consumer recycled plastic with Global Recycle Standard (GRS) certification to ensure the fabric isn’t causing human or ecological harm. They also use stitch construction to reduce the harmful byproducts of glue and sulfur emissions from vulcanization, albeit more expensive.
